Long Island Edges Delaware 104-103 in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN – The Long Island Nets (10-18) topped the Delaware 87ers (15-11) 104-103 today at Barclays Center. The Nets are now 1-2 in their season series with Delaware.

Guard Yogi Ferrell led the Nets with 20 points – his ninth game of 20+ points this season – to go along with six rebounds and a game-high-tying six assists in 39 minutes.

Brooklyn Nets assignee Chris McCullough recorded 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in 31 minutes for Long Island, while Carrick Felix added 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists and two steals in 38 minutes in the win.

Despite shooting just 40.2 percent from the field, Long Island forced 25 Delaware turnovers in the victory. The Nets also edged the 87ers 19-15 on the offensive glass and outscored Delaware 23-10 in second chance points.

The Nets led by as many as nine points in the first quarter before settling for a 27-25 lead at the quarter’s end. Delaware responded by outscoring Long Island 30-23 in the second to hold a 55-50 lead at halftime, with the 87ers’ Shawn Long leading all scorers with 22 points.

Long Island then outscored the 87ers 54-48 in the second half, despite a close fourth quarter that saw the score tied up three times within the game’s final four minutes.

The Nets trailed by four with 24.5 seconds remaining in the game, but Ferrell hit a 3-pointer to pull Long Island within one, 103-102, with 22 seconds to go. The 87ers then committed a quick turnover, and Trahson Burrell sunk a pull-up jumper with 5.9 seconds on the clock to seal Long Island’s victory. Burrell finished the game with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting with four rebounds and two blocks in 23 minutes off the bench.

Delaware’s Long scored a game-high 33 points on 13-of-17 shooting with a game-high 13 rebounds and three blocks for Delaware, while Roscoe Smith added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.

Long Island will travel to Erie next and will face the BayHawks on Friday, January 27, at 7 p.m. EST. The 87ers will travel to Canada to face the Raptors 905 next on Saturday, January 28, at 7:30 p.m. EST.
