LONG ISLAND DEFEATED IN FIRST WINTER SHOWCASE MATCHUP

ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 20, 2023) – The Long Island Nets (8-7) the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, were defeated by the Austin Spurs (8-8) 117-100 on Wednesday evening during the team’s first NBA G League Winter Showcase matchup at the Orange County Convention Center.
Brooklyn two-way guard Keon Johnson posted 25 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes. Long Island guard Kyler Edwards tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, one assist and two steals in 36 minutes. While on assignment with Long Island, Brooklyn forward Dariq Whitehead recorded 13 points and five rebounds in 18 minutes.
Long Island got off to a slow start in the first quarter, while Austin shot 48.0 percent from the field. The Nets closed the period down by seven, 26-19. Long Island fought to shrink the gap in the second quarter, outscoring Austin 32-28. Despite shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from behind the arc in the second quarter, the Nets trailed the Spurs by three to close the first half, 54-51.
The Nets continued to chip away at the deficit, while the Spurs kept their foot on the gas. Austin outscored Long Island 30-19 and maintained its lead in the third quarter. The Nets closed the quarter down by 14, 84-70. Austin carried its effort into the final quarter and went on to defeat Long Island by 17, 117-100.
San Antonio guard Blake Wesley led the way for Austin, while on assigmnet with 28 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 29 minutes. San Antonio two-way center Dominick Barlow recorded 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 30 minutes.
Long Island will play its second Winter Showcase game against Iowa on Friday, Dec. 22, at 11 a.m. ET at the Orange County Convention Center.
