The NBA Development League (D-League) is the NBA’s official minor league, preparing players, coaches, officials, trainers and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory. With the Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets purchasing affiliates to begin play for the 2016-17 season, the league will feature 22 teams, all with one-to-one affiliations with NBA franchises. The NBA D- League offers elite professional basketball at an affordable price in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

About 30% of NBA players have NBA D-League experience, including current Nets player Sean Kilpatrick. In addition, Nets General Manager Sean Marks served as GM of the Austin Toros while working in the front office of the San Antonio Spurs.

The Long Island Nets will strengthen the player development efforts of the Brooklyn Nets, whose previous D-League affiliation with the Springfield Armor ended in 2014. The Long Island Nets will play in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division, along with the Maine Red Claws (Boston Celtics), Westchester Knicks (New York Knicks), Raptors 905 (Toronto Raptors), Delaware 87ers (Philadelphia 76ers) and Erie BayHawks (Orlando Magic). During the 2016-17 inaugural season, the Long Island Nets will play their home games at Barclays Center, and will hold practices at HSS Training Center. Beginning with the 2017-18 season, the team will move to its permanent home at the reimagined NassauVeterans Memorial Coliseum.
